Senior Man Killed by Car on NJ-88 in Brick Township

Police in Brick Township are investigating a pedestrian strike that caused fatal injuries Saturday night.

According to a preliminary statement released by police, the incident happened at approximately 10:35 p.m. when a 2000 Chevrolet Corvette, driven by a 44-year old Brick resident, traveled westbound on State Highway 88 between Bruce Street and Post Road.

Police official said 72-year-old Arthur W. Burke attempted to walk across NJ-88 from south to north and approximately 100 feet east of Post Road when he entered the path of the car.

Police said the vehicle made an attempt to avoid Burke but was unable to and struck him with the right front bumper of the car.

According to police, the impact caused the pedestrian to strike the windshield and as the car began to slow down, Burke fell from the vehicle onto the curb and grass area on the side of the road.

EMS rushed the Burke to Jersey Shore Regional Trauma Center suffering a severe head injury where he succumbed to his injuries a short time later police said.

Police say one passenger inside the car suffered minor injuries and was transported to Ocean Medical Center – Brick Hospital for treatment, but the driver sustained no injuries.

State Highway 88 between the interchange and Jack Martin Boulevard and Post Road was closed for several hours according to police.

Traffic Safety Officer David Thergesen of the Brick Township Police Department and Detective Michael Proto of the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are conducting the ongoing investigation.
