Salem County Corrections Officer Accused of Sexually Assaulting Inmate

A 28-year-old corrections officer was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting one of the male inmates at the Salem County jail, officials said.

Elbert B. Johnson II was arrested charged yesterday with sexual assault and official misconduct.

According to officials, on April 1, during nighttime lockdown, Johnson was sent into the unit to cover for the on duty officer who was going to take a break.  During his time there, the alleged attack occurred in the 30-year-old inmate's cell. 

The following morning, the inmate reported the attack to jail authorities. 

Johnson was immediately suspended without pay with intent to dismiss.

As a result of the investigation, Johnson was arrested and charged.

Johnson is being held on a $50,000 bail in a jail outside the county. 

As per jail protocol, the alleged victim was moved to another correctional facility in New Jersey.
