Hospital officials say the newly installed Mako 4 SmartRobotics™ system allows surgeons to use detailed 3D imaging to plan each procedure with greater accuracy.

The technology guides the surgeon in real time, helping remove only damaged bone, protect healthy tissue, and ensure precise placement of implants—all steps that can lead to smoother recoveries and better long-term outcomes.

“This investment underscores our commitment to delivering top-tier care,” said Deirdre A. Blaus, Chief Administrative Officer at RWJUH Somerset.

She noted that robotic-assisted procedures offer more personalized and minimally invasive options that help patients get back on their feet faster.

This marks the hospital’s fourth surgical robot, adding to its growing suite of high-tech tools that already includes three daVinci systems used in urology, gynecology, colorectal, and general surgery.

The upgrade strengthens RWJUH Somerset’s nationally recognized Joint Surgery Program, which holds The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for hip and knee replacement.

The hospital has also earned high-performing ratings in Orthopedics from U.S. News & World Report and recently received the 2025 Healthgrades Surgical Care Excellence Award, placing it among the top hospitals nationwide.
