According to a statement from the Kearny Police Department, the shooting occurred during the morning hours of January 28, 2026, as a man was driving along Route 1&9 in Kearny with a woman and two young children inside the vehicle.

Investigators said another driver opened fire on the family’s car.

While no one inside the vehicle was physically injured, police said one bullet pierced the rear door and struck a child’s bag inside the car, narrowly missing the occupants.

Detective Montes led the investigation and determined the incident stemmed from a driving-related altercation that began in Jersey City.

Authorities said the suspect followed the victims into Kearny before firing at their vehicle.

Using a combination of surveillance camera footage and other technological resources, detectives were able to quickly identify both the suspect and the vehicle involved.

An alert was issued to surrounding law enforcement agencies as efforts to locate the shooter intensified.

On February 5, 2026, units from the Newark Police Department located the suspect vehicle. Kearny detectives responded to the scene, seized the vehicle for evidentiary purposes, and arrested Aaron M. Nundra, 39, of Jersey City.

Police said a search warrant was executed on the vehicle, leading to the recovery of a Taurus 9mm handgun equipped with a high-capacity magazine.

The weapon was found inside a bag on the passenger seat.
