Retired Cop Fires Shots at Carjacker in Newark

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office has been notified of a shots-fired incident with a retired police officer involved on the border of Newark's West and Central Ward. 

Preliminary information at the scene indicated that around 3:55 p.m., an unidentified retired police officer was in the vicinity of South 12th Street and 14th Avenue when a carjacker attempted to steal the vehicle using a weapon. 

The retired officer reportedly drew his weapon and fired at the suspect.

According to reports, the suspect fled westbound on 14th Avenue towards Ashland Street wearing a tan vest with orange sleeves and black pants. 

He is approximately 6 ft. tall with a thin build. Hospitals in the region have been placed on notice for potential walking gunshot victims, but no injuries have been reported at this time. 

The incident is under investigation.
