A reputed member of the Bloods street gang was arrested Thursday night on weapons and drug charges by a law enforcement task force comprised of Essex County sheriff’s detectives and Irvington police officers.
Sheriff Armando Fontoura stated that the task force officers executed a search warrant at 23-year-old Dwayne Spann's 18th Avenue home.
Upon arrival, authorities found the front door of the residence wide open. Once Spann saw the officers, hen ran into the kitchen and tossed a shopping bag behind the freezer. The bag contained 25 heroin-filled glassine envelops, stamped ‘SHOWTIME’ in purple ink, 15 plastic jugs of ‘crack’ cocaine and seven bags of marijuana.
The street value of the narcotics is estimated at $3,000.
An orderly search of the rest of the apartment yielded a fully loaded, .38 caliber, Smith & Wesson semi-automatic handgun, a fully loaded and defaced EKOL Major 9mm semi-automatic handgun and an additional ammunition magazine was found hidden under Spann’s bedroom mattress.
Spann was charged with three counts each of the possession of a controlled dangerous substance, possession of CDS with intent to distribute, possession of CDS with intend to distribute with 1000 feet of Central High School, and possession of CDS with intent to distribute within 500 feet of Nat Turner Park.
Spann was also charged with two counts of the unlawful possession of a weapon and one count each for the possession of a defaced weapon, possession of a weapon while committing a narcotics crime and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.
Spann was lodged at the county jail where he awaits a bail hearing on the charges.
