Rahway Athletic Director to Sue City for $10 Million After Charges Accusing Him of Assaulting an Officer Were Dismissed

Rahway athletic director files notice of intent to sue the City of Rahway for $10 million after charges accusing him of assaulting an officer were dismissed. 

Thomas Lewis, 63, was arrested at a December basketball tournament after Officer Justyna Halat claimed that after approaching Lewis and a spectator, allegedly involved in a verbal dispute, Lewis pushed the officer in the chest area.

Lewis was arrested and taken to police headquarters, where he was fingerprinted and processed. He was charged with fourth-degree aggravated assault on a police officer an indictable offense. 

Shortly after arrest, Lewis received letter from state Department of Education's Criminal History Review Unit, notifying him that if he were convicted of the charge, he would be permanently barred from employment with any school under the state's jurisdiction.
