Quick-Thinking Newark Detectives Save the Life of a Suicidal Man

Newark

Newark Police officials are reporting that Detectives Beverly Cavalcante and Bobby Bullock of the Newark Police Division’s Robbery Section assisted a suicidal man, preventing him from taking his own life, yesterday.

“I am grateful for the teamwork and dedication to the preservation of life these Detectives exhibited in the face of a delicate and dangerous situation,” Director Ambrose said. “Police work like this should be applauded and I’m the first to credit these officers for their quick thinking and life-saving actions.”

Detective Beverly Cavalcante spoke by phone to the man, who indicated that he was depressed and suicidal. As the man threatened to kill himself several times during the conversation, Detective Cavalcante skillfully prolonged the discussion using de-escalation approaches.

Simultaneously, Detective Bullock dispatched officers to the man’s residence.

Responding officers made contact with the distraught man and he was transported to University Hospital for crisis intervention evaluation.

There, the man was officially determined to be suicidal and was admitted for further evaluation and treatment.

“It takes a tremendous amount of professionalism to gain the trust of someone who wants to end his or her life,” Director Ambrose added. “I respect these detectives and the officers who responded to the victim’s home for their dogged commitment to a preventing an untimely loss of life.”
