Pursuit of Vehicle Wanted for Homicide Crashes in Newark, Ending in Arrest

Newark

A high-speed pursuit of a vehicle with suspects wanted for a felony ended in a crash with one of the suspects arrested in Newark on Monday night.

Newark Police engaged in the vehicle pursuit after the driver of a Jeep -wanted for a homicide investigation- failed to stop for officers' attempts to pull it over.

Police say the pursuit made its way through parts of the city where the suspect led officers to the eastbound lanes of I-280. Authorities say they observed the driver's erratic operation of the Jeep with varying speeds and lane control issues.

The pursuit continued off the highway where the driver crashed near 191 Orange Street, where both suspects bailed from the vehicle initiating a foot pursuit.

Police say at least one suspect was captured, then taken to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office for questioning in one of the city's homicides that occurred on 15th Street and 14th Avenue.

Officers searched the area for a second suspect, but it's not clear if the assailant was ever arrested.

One police car sustained damage but no officer suffering injuries, according to reports.

The incident is under investigation.
