Prisoner Escapes from Jail in Newark

Authorities in Newark spent the overnight searching for a man who escaped jail in the city Friday night.

According to preliminary reports, the unidentified man somehow got away from jail guards at the Essex County correctional facility around 9:10 p.m. 

Officials said the Essex County Sheriff’s Office, Newark Police, The Essex County Police Department of Corrections Officers and a K-9 unit from Orange joined in the efforts to find the escaped prisoner. 

Officials would only say that the suspect is a 5’6” tall Hispanic male with grey pants and a white shirt. He was last seen on Avenue A. 

The investigation into how the prisoner escaped is in its early stages. 

 

Police closed Doremus Avenue as they searched for the prisoner.
