Customers Scramble for Cover after Liquor Store Robbery Ends in Irvington Police Involved Shooting

Essex County officials are investigating a police-involved shooting that sent one person to the hospital overnight in Irvington Township.

According to a witness account, a male suspect stormed into the Mueller Star Liquor Store with a gun in his hand and announced a robbery with about a dozen customers inside before 10 p.m.

According to reports, the suspect then ran from the store where officers responded and confronted him in the vicinity of 503 Nye Avenue

Police reportedly opened fire on the suspect, striking him twice in the leg after the gunmen allegedly pointed the weapon at officers.

The sound of gunfire sent customers scrambling to the rear of the store and hiding in the establishment's storage room.

EMS rushed the victim to University Hospital in Newark where he remains in stable condition according to reports.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office arrived at the scene and has taken over the active and ongoing investigation.
