Police Talk Suicidal Man to Safety in Newark

Newark

NEWARK – A negotiator for the Newark Police Emergency Services Unit successfully calmed a disturbed man who was threatening to kill himself and talked him into peacefully surrendering.

“We had a good ending,” Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said. “It was handled very well by our trained professional.”

Police were called to a location on the 100 block of Livingston Street at 11:15 a.m. this morning where the man was holding a knife to his own throat.

Police say the negotiator arrived shortly after and began a dialog with the man, during which the man asked for Chinese food. Police obliged and shortly after he put the knife down and surrendered.

Police say the man was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.
