Police Seek Driver Responsible for Newark Hit-and-Run

Newark Public Safety officials request the public’s help locating the driver of a vehicle which struck a female child and did not stop on October 14.

According to Newark police, the hit-and-run incident occurred around 6 p.m. at Springfield Avenue and Bergen Street when the driver of a 2013 grey BMW X5 drove through the red light and struck the child while she was in the crosswalk.

Officials said he fled westbound on Springfield Avenue toward Fairmount Avenue, driving away in the car, which had a Pennsylvania registration (KCR8792)

According to officials, a Police Officer responded to the scene after being flagged down by a motorist. When the officer arrived, the girl was lying down in the street with a head injury and multiple lacerations to her hands.

Newark Police said the officer assessed the child’s condition and called Emergency Medical Services, which rendered aid and transported her to University Hospital for treatment.

The driver, a Black male with a medium complexion, was wearing glasses and a Kufi-style hat.
