Authorities in Newark are investigating a Tuesday afternoon shooting that prompted a heavy police presence in the city’s South Ward.
According to preliminary information released by police, a ShotSpotter device detected gunfire around 2 p.m. near 565 Bergen Street, close to the intersection with Avon Avenue.
Responding officers arrived at the scene and located several shell casings, confirming that a shooting had taken place.
Following the discovery, officers conducted a thorough search of the surrounding community in an effort to locate both victims and suspects.
Investigators believe four individuals fled the scene shortly after the gunfire erupted.
At this time, no injuries have been reported, and the suspects remain at large.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear as the investigation continues.
