Police Quell Large Fight at Newark High School Basketball Games

Newark

There were no serious injuries reported after a large fight broke out at a basketball game in a Newark Public School on Thursday evening.

According to preliminary reports, Newark Police and Newark Public School Security already on duty patrolling the game at West Side High School phoned in for extra police personnel after a fight caused a crowd of spectators to spill out onto the streets with separate physical altercations taking place 'up and down' South Orange Avenue at around 8:30 p.m.

Police arrived at the scene and were able to gain control of the crowd that separated three in the vicinity of three city blocks.

There were reports of shots fired in the area of South 12th Street, Ashland Street, and South Orange but after police conducted a thorough search of the scene, RLS Metro Breaking News' field crews did not observe a crime scene established in the area.

We are awaiting a request for information from Newark Police officials to confirm numerous 'rumors' that gunfire erupted in the vicinity of the school during the incident or if it was connected to the altercation.

The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.
