Police in Newark are currently investigating a possible connection between a physical altercation at a local charter school and shots fired near University Hospital on Sunday afternoon.OfficersAuthorities responded to reports of gunfire on the West Market Street side of University Plaza around 4 p.m.

Upon arrival, police found shell casings and called in the Major Crimes Unit to aid in the investigation.

Witnesses recounted seeing approximately a dozen juveniles congregating at the scene, purportedly following a confrontation that originated at North Star High School, Central Avenue/Washington Park Campus, on Friday.

Witnesses said that the dispute spilled over into the weekend, culminating in the altercation and subsequent shooting near the hospital.

It's believed that one of the juvenile's parents produced a weapon and began firing.

As of now, no arrests have been made, and police continue to probe into the incident.

The exact motive behind the shooting remains under investigation as authorities work to piece together the events leading up to the gunfire.
