Police Officials Announce Several Felony Arrests in Newark's Downtown

Authorities in Newark are reporting that members of the 3rd Precinct have arrested five Newark men for various alleged felonies that occurred in Newark's Downtown. .

According to a statement released by Newark Police, Mr. Taariq S. Mitchell, 40, Mr. Abdul Price, 39, Mr. Quadir A. Simmons, and Mr. Ozim D. Brown, both 19, and Talut A. Williams, 31, for CDS Possession.

Police say on yesterday -Tuesday- shortly before 12:40 a.m., officers on foot patrol on Pennington Street smelled a strong odor of marijuana emanating from a gold Infinity G35.

The vehicle was occupied by four males. Officers conducted a motor vehicle stop at Broad Street, near Chestnut Street. Officers observed the front seat passenger, Taariq S. Mitchell, with a handgun and he was immediately arrested. The handgun was reported stolen out of Horry County, South Carolina according to the police statement.

Police say they found Mitchell in possession of 12 small bags of CDS marijuana then charged him with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Receiving Stolen Property and CDS Possession. Mitchell is further charged with Certain Persons Prohibited from Weapon Possession.

According to police, the other two occupants of the vehicle, Simmons and Brown, were each charged separately with CDS Possession.

Police say they located 11 large vials of marijuana, 30 envelopes of heroin and seven vials of cocaine in the vehicle and charged Price, the driver, with three counts of CDS Possession.

In a separate incident in the city's downtown, at approximately 10:20 p.m. yesterday, officers patrolling the area of Halsey and Market streets observed a male in possession of CDS.

Police say, Talut Williams, was found in possession of 40 glassine envelopes of CDS heroin when they immediately arrested then charged him with CDS Possession.

These charges are merely accusations.

Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
