Police Involved Shooting Under Investigation in Newark

Essex County authorities are investigating a shots fired incident that involved a police officer that occurred during the overnight hours in Newark.

Officials details regarding the what transpired during the incident are pending a police information request but according to preliminary reports, police set up crime scenes in the 50's block of Irvine Turner Boulevard, the intersection of Bergen and Springfield Avenue and 15th Avenue and Springfield Avenue after officers engaged two suspects for an unknown reason that resulted in at least one police officer firing his weapon at the suspects.

According to eyewitnesses, two suspects were taken by EMS to University Hospital in an unknown condition. It is not immediately clear if the injured suspect was struck by bullets.

The incident appears to be a police-involved shots fired investigation with officers pursuing a vehicle that ended on Irvine Turner Boulevard according to residents who contacted RLS Media.

There were no reports of injured police officers.

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.

NPD UPDATE 6:47AM “Shortly before 11:30 p.m. last night, members of NPD attempted a motor vehicle stop in which a handgun was observed. A pursuit ensued and shots were fired. Two suspects were injured and a loaded semi automatic handgun was found in the car“.

**ECPO UPDATE 5:02 AM** “ We can confirm that the Essex County Prosecutor's Office is investigating the incident. We can confirm two males shot. It is very early in the investigation”.
