Police Investigate Weapon Found on School Grounds in Newark

An investigation is underway into a gun being found at a high school in the city's South Ward.

Authorities responded to the Malcolm X. Shabazz High School located in the 80's block of Johnson Ave. at around 2:40 p.m. where reports of a loaded gun was found on school grounds.

Police arrived to the scene where at least two juveniles were detained and a loaded weapon was reportedly recovered.

It is not immediately known if the weapon ever made it into the building at this time.

In other school related incidents around the city, an unidentified incident that happened at the Weequahic High School Thursday sent about a dozen law enforcement units to the scene shortly before 1 p.m. where two juveniles were detained (escorted out of the building) by police.

Officials from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office did not have immediate details regarding the incident that sent more than a half dozen Essex County Sheriff Department vehicles, about three Newark Police Department vehicles and several school security vehicles (NPD "auxiliary" units) to the scene.

Newark Police have not answered several requests for information. School officials referred questions to the district office.

Extra security units were added to a charter school located in the 20's block of Maiden Lane after reports of a threat was made to the school. Police canvased the area around the downtown school where there were no arrests immediately reported.

School officials said students were never in any danger.

Shortly before 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon at a high school in the city's Central Ward, police were called to the scene for reports of a physical altercation in progress.

Units arrived to the scene where school administrators broke up a fight involving two students inside the building.

There were no immediate reports of arrests but police incident reports were taken at the scene.
