Off-Duty Cop Fires Shot at Potential Carjacking Suspects in Newark

Essex County authorities are investigating a shooting that involved a police officer at a restaurant in Newark overnight.

According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at approximately 10 p.m. in the vicinity of Clay and Broad streets where an off-duty cop opened fire on several males who attempted to pull off an armed carjacking near the Burger King.

The suspect ran through the parking lot of the restaurant and was last seen in the vicinity of 7th Avenue and Martin Luther King Boulevard after the officer fired the shots reports said.

Police are looking for two to three black males and a Hispanic male who ran from the scene according to reports.

The officer was transported to University Hospital for precautionary purposes but did not reportedly suffer any injuries.

The shooting remains under investigation.
