A police encounter involving a man armed with a knife left the man dead and a woman hospitalized with multiple stab wounds Friday morning in Cape May County, authorities said.
According to information released by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office, Middle Township Police officers encountered a disabled vehicle at approximately 10:21 a.m. at the intersection of Route 9 and Satt Boulevard in the Rio Grande section of Middle Township.
Authorities said officers approached the vehicle after hearing screaming coming from inside.
Officers forced their way into the vehicle and allegedly found an adult male holding a knife to an adult woman, according to the preliminary investigation.
Two Middle Township police officers discharged their firearms, striking the man.
The man was pronounced dead following the encounter. The woman was transported to a hospital for treatment of multiple stab wounds.
The identities of the man, woman and officers involved have not yet been released.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office is investigating the shooting under a state law requiring the office to investigate deaths that occur during encounters with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity.
The investigation remains active and ongoing.
