Police Close Newark West Ward Street After Shots Fired Complaints

Police in Newark closed a street in the city's West Ward after they received complaints of shots fired in the neighborhood Thursday evening.

Residents in the 80's block of Alexander Street dialed 911 after they said they heard several loud popping noises shortly before 7:50 p.m.

Several West Ward Police officers arrived at the scene and canvassed the community for shell casings and possible victims, but after a search, nothing was found.

Police officials say the closed the street for precautionary purposes.

Officials say a ShotSpotter device did activate during the time residents called for the incident.
