Police Car Crash Hospitalizes Officers in Hillside

Police in Hillside are investigating a crash that sent a police officer to the hospital overnight.

Emergency responders rushed to the vicinity of Chancellor Avenue and Bergen Street at around 12:45 a.m. when they received reports of a crashed that involved a police cruiser.

Crews arriving at the scene found two marked Hillside police cars crashed into separate trees at that location.

EMS transported at least two officers to the hospital where their injuries were not reported as life-threatening.

It is not immediately clear if the officers were involved in a pursuit, but residents in the area said they heard the engine of cars speeding through before the loud crash.

Newark Police officials confirmed that the pursuit did not involve their officers.

The official cause of the crash remains under investigation.
