Newark Police Bust Man in Possession of Stolen Handgun

Newark Police are reporting the arrest of Mr. Taivon M. Pearce, 23, of Newark, for possession of a loaded and stolen handgun on Thursday.

Police say shortly before 9:40 p.m., a man flagged down 3rd Precinct officers patrolling the area of Pacific and Thomas streets and reported that a male attempted to carjack him at Pacific and Oliver streets.

Police say they observed a male fitting the suspect description entering the Pennington Court Housing Complex near the South Street entrance.

Upon becoming aware of police presence, the man ran, tossing a fanny pack before officers apprehended him police said.

The tossed fanny pack contained a loaded silver .40 caliber handgun that was reported stolen out of North Carolina.

Police charged Pearce with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon, Possession of Prohibited Weapons (hollow points), Resisting Arrest and Receiving Stolen Property.

These charges are merely accusations.

The suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
