Police Arrest Clifton Man for DUI After Crashing Newark Police Car

Newark Police officials are reporting the arrest of Mr. Fernando Carrillo, 20, of Clifton, for striking a police vehicle and pinning an officer at McCarter Highway and 3rd Street this morning.

According to police, just after 3:10 a.m., a police officer at the scene of an earlier collision was outside when a car struck his police vehicle, pushing it into the officer and pinning his legs.

The officer was transported to University Hospital for treatment and is reportedly in stable condition police officials said.

Carrillo, the driver, was arrested and is charged with assault by auto, causing bodily injury while driving under the influence.

This charge is merely an accusation. This suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Drivers are reminded to not drink and drive.
