Police Apprehend Armed Man Barricaded Inside Vehicle in Elizabeth

According to police, at around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, Union County Police Officer Danny Fonseca located a vehicle parked after hours in the Elizabeth section of Warinanco Park.

Officer Fonseca approached to investigate and observed a male, later identified as Jeffrey Arana 41 of Elizabeth, holding a semi automatic pistol to his head and yelling for the Officer to leave him alone.

Officer Fonseca was able to see that Arana was the only occupant of the vehicle and immediately requested assistance.

Fonseca began a dialogue with Arana, during which Arana fired one shot, shattering the drivers side window, Officer Fonseca did not return fire and continued to talk to Arana.

Elizabeth, Roselle, Linden and additional County PD Officers arrived to assist, with Fonseca continuing to talk to Arana.

The Union County Emergency Response Team, UCERT, responded to the scene and specially trained negotiators continued to talk to Arana.

Police said in about three hours, Arana agreed to exit his vehicle and was taken into custody without incident.

He was taken to Trinitas Hospital for evaluation and the investigation is ongoing by County Police Detectives.
