A community program commemorating the 100th birthday of Malcolm X will be held this weekend in Plainfield, bringing together local leaders, artists, and residents to reflect on his enduring impact.
According to a statement released by the People’s Organization for Progress, the event—titled “Celebrating Our Black Shining Malcolm X @100”—will take place on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at 12 noon at the Plainfield Public Library, located at 800 Park Avenue.
The celebration will feature a blend of spoken word, musical performances, video presentations, and community dialogue. Among the featured speakers is Bill Davis, a respected educator, author, and longtime community activist, who will also serve as moderator for the event.

Lawrence Hamm, Chairman of the People’s Organization for Progress, will join Davis to speak about the modern-day relevance of Malcolm X’s teachings and the continued struggle for racial justice and equality.
Vocalist Tamara Horn and poet Lyle Omolayo will contribute cultural performances, and excerpts from Malcolm X’s most powerful speeches will be shown throughout the program.
A key component of the gathering will be an open discussion segment, giving audience members the opportunity to ask questions and explore how Malcolm X’s legacy continues to shape Black identity, activism, and global human rights movements.
Born Malcolm Little on May 19, 1925, Malcolm X became an iconic voice in the fight against systemic racism and for Black empowerment.
Known for his fierce advocacy of self-determination and justice, he became a global symbol of resistance before being assassinated at the age of 39 on February 21, 1965.
Organizers encourage all members of the community to attend the event and participate in honoring one of the most influential leaders in African American history.
