Physical Dispute Inside Funeral Home Suspends Service in Newark's North Ward

A physical altercation that broke out inside a funeral home in the city's North Ward had police on the scene investigating.

Police were called to a funeral home located in the 200 block Mount Prospect Ave. at around 6:30 p.m. on reports of a physical altercation in progress at that location.

Officers arrived to the scene to find about two dozen people standing outside of the funeral home after a fight erupted inside forcing officials to evacuate the facility then call police.

According to several witnesses at the scene, shortly before the physical altercation happened, an argument ensued between several people over if a person (reported as one of the deceased relatives) would be allowed to view the deceased. The argument resulted into a physical scuffle according to witnesses.

A female was transported to the hospital by EMS suffering an unrelated medical condition.

Police stopped several people at the gate that lead to the entrance of the funeral home telling them that services were postponed and to contact the family for future viewings.

The investigation is being handled by the Newark Police Department.
