Police in Maplewood are investigating the cause of an altercation that erupted outside Columbia High School Gym Monday evening.

According to Maplewood Police officials, Columbia High School hosted a basketball game against Irvington High School. At the conclusion of the game, a large group of over a hundred individuals exited the gym.

Police said multiple fights erupted within the crowd prompting Maplewood Police officers assigned to the game to notify the police department via radio.

Officers quickly responded to the Columbia High School gymnasium parking lot at approximately 8:30 p.m. In the area, Maplewood officers requested mutual aid from other jurisdictions to assist due to the number of people.

The crowd dispersed, and the visiting team safely left the area. Officials said EMS evaluated two students with parents present and determined no further medical assistance.

Police would not say if anyone in Irvington Township Basketball team were involved at this time.

Maplewood Police Department transported one juvenile involved to police headquarters for parent notification.

The incident remains under investigation.
