Officials in Essex County have confirmed that a male pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle in Newark's South Ward Saturday evening.
According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, at approximately 6:30 p.m., police responded to reports of a pedestrian down near Lyons and Schuyler avenues.
Police and EMS arrived at the scene and found a severely injured male lying on the ground after witnesses said a vehicle struck then dragged the victim a short distance.
According to witnesses, the vehicle's driver sped from the scene, but police in Hillside located the vehicle in their township a short time later.
County officials said the victim was rushed to Beth Israel Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead a short time later.
The investigation into the incident remains active and ongoing.
