By: Richard L. Smith

Officials at The Essex County Prosecutor's Office were notified of a pedestrian strike that fatally injured a man on a road in downtown Newark  Sunday.

The early New Year’s morning crash happened at the intersection of Market and Mulberry streets around 1 a.m.

Residents in a nearby highrise building apartments dialed 911 when they saw someone lying in the roadway after a vehicle stuck them at that location.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and transported the unconscious and unresponsive victim to University hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead before 2:20 a.m.

The incident is the second fatal pedestrian strike in a week, where individuals were killed at a dangerous Newark intersection.

On December 27th,  at approximately 6 a.m., EMS found the lifeless body of a man who had been struck by a vehicle near the intersections of Peerless Place and Frelinghuysen Avenue.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
