Pedestrian Killed by Hit-and-Run Vehicle in Maplewood

Essex County officials are investigating a pedestrian strike that caused fatal injuries in a section of Maplewood early Monday morning.

According to a preliminary investigation at the scene, emergency responders rushed to the intersection 43rd Street and Chancellor Avenue after receiving reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at approximately 3:05 a.m.

Upon arrival, crews immediately began life-saving CPR on a severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive person who was found lying in the street at that location.

Officials say the victim was pronounced dead a short time later.

While investigating at the scene, police say the vehicle that struck the victim could not be immediately located and fled the scene.

The incident has been taken over by the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, who has launched an active and ongoing investigation.
