The City of Paterson has earned statewide recognition for its efforts to reduce litter, combat illegal dumping, and improve neighborhood conditions.

According to the New Jersey Clean Communities Council (NJCCC), Paterson received the 2026 Clean Communities Champion Award during the organization’s 21st annual Litter Summit and Awards Ceremony in Manahawkin.

The honor recognizes municipalities demonstrating strong commitments to litter prevention, community cleanups, and public education.

Under Mayor André Sayegh’s administration, Paterson has expanded neighborhood cleanup efforts through its Saturday Clean Communities initiative.

NJCCC officials said crews collected approximately seven tons of trash during the program’s first Saturday cleanup in April 2026.

The city also launched its “Paterson is Picking Up” campaign on Earth Day in 2025, focusing on removing litter, addressing illegal dumping, eliminating graffiti, and encouraging residents to take pride in their neighborhoods.

Mayor Sayegh accepted the award on behalf of Paterson, highlighting the city’s continued commitment to cleaner streets and stronger community involvement.

Paterson has also become an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, further supporting its ongoing environmental improvement efforts.
