Authorities in Passaic County have arrested and charged a 21-year-old Paterson man in connection with a fatal shooting that took place in the city last month.

According to a statement released by Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Paterson Police Officer-In-Charge Patrick Murray, Jihad Abdullah was taken into custody on April 23 without incident.

He now faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, first-degree conspiracy to commit murder, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, and second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The charges stem from a March 22 shooting that occurred around 5:05 p.m. in the area of 12th Avenue and East 24th Street.

Paterson police officers responding to reports of gunfire found the victim, 21-year-old Jah’Zyer Montgomery of Garfield, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was transported to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators identified Abdullah as one of the individuals involved in the shooting through a joint effort by the Paterson Police Department and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutors have filed a motion seeking pre-trial detention for Abdullah. A Superior Court judge will determine the outcome of that motion at a later date.
