Paterson Man Charged with Fatally Shooting 26-Year-Old Male

Authorities in Passaic County announced that based upon an investigation by the Paterson Police Department, Rogelio Gonzalez, 30, of Paterson, was arrested on October 30 in connection to the homicide that took place on January 23, 2023, in the area of Berkshire and Chamberlain Avenue in Paterson.

Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes stated that Rogelio Gonzalez is charged with Murder, Attempted Murder, Possession of a Handgun for an Unlawful Purpose, and Unlawful Possession of a Handgun.

Officials said at approximately 8:50 p.m. on January 23, Paterson Police Department patrol units were dispatched to the area in Paterson on a report of shots fired.

As officers canvassed the area, authorities say, they received information that a victim of a shooting arrived at Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in a private vehicle.

The victim, later identified as Marvin Lavezarri, 26-year-old from Paterson, sustained a gunshot to his buttocks, according to officials.

Officials say on January 25, the victim succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned the victim was with two other individuals when a car pulled up and opened fire on them, officials stated.

Authorities say the two individuals were not struck by gunfire.

As the investigation progressed, detectives learned that Rogelio Gonzalez was the shooter.

Rogelio Gonzalez currently awaits his first appearance at Central Judicial Processing, officials said.

The State will file a motion for pretrial detention against Mr. Gonzalez, which will be heard by a Superior Court judge at a date and time to be determined by the court officials.  Ad
