Paterson Man Accused of Stabbing Roommate to Death, Captured

Authorities announced that through the intensive efforts of the Major Crimes Homicide Unit of the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office and the Paterson Police Department, along with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service, Segundo “Paul” Ocon, 37, of Paterson, the suspect in the May 5th homicide of Jose Edward Barriga Huaya, 48, was apprehended earlier today at 724 East 27th Street in Paterson, and placed under arrest.

The investigation reveals that the homicide took place in the early morning hours of May 5, 2017, inside an apartment located at 410 Market Street in Paterson, which was shared by both men, along with a third roommate.

Segundo Ocon is alleged to have stabbed Jose Edward Barriga Huaya twice in the torso with a large kitchen knife after Barriga Huaya was allegedly making noise in the living room of the apartment while Segundo Ocon attempted to sleep.

It is further alleged that Segundo Ocon fled the apartment after the stabbing, leaving the knife at the scene.

Jose Edward Barriga Huaya was pronounced deceased at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center in Paterson, at approximately 3:06 a.m. that same morning.

Segundo Ocon never returned to the Market Street apartment.

Segundo Ocon has been charged with murder, first degree; possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, third degree; and unlawful possession of a weapon, fourth degree.

If convicted, Segundo Ocon faces up to life imprisonment with a mandatory period of 30 years of parole ineligibility.

A criminal complaint is merely an accusation. Despite this accusation, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The First Appearance for Segundo Ocon is scheduled for tomorrow, May 12, 2017, at 1:30 p.m., before the Honorable John F. Meola, P.J.M.C., in courtroom 411 of the New Courthouse in Paterson.
