Overnight Newark Armed Carjacking Leads to Police Pursuit

Newark Police are on the search for suspects involved in an armed carjacking that took place in the North Ward late Sunday night.

The incident unfolded shortly before 11:25 p.m., with police being dispatched to the vicinity of McCarter Highway and Clay Street following reports of an ongoing carjacking.

The suspects, armed with a weapon, swiftly stole a victim's Acura SUV from the driver and fled the scene at high speed. Responding swiftly, Newark police officers located the occupied vehicle and initiated a pursuit.

OfficersThe chase escalated onto Route 78 and then onto the northbound lanes of the NJ Turnpike.

The reckless driving of the suspects led the police through various parts of Elizabeth, but eventually, the carjacked vehicle was found abandoned on Hayes Street in Newark.

The driver, including at least one other carjacker in the SUV, remains at large.

No serious injuries were reported in the course of this pursuit, and police continued to canvas the area and investigate the incident, urging anyone with information to come forward.
