Overnight Gunfire Erupts on Halsey Street in Downtown Newark

Newark

Newark Police officials are actively investgiating a shots-fired incident that erupted in the city's downtown on Wednesday night.

According to police, there were no injuries reported after gunfire rang out in the vicinity of 169 Halsey Street between Bank and Market street at approximately 12:50 a.m.

Several police officers arrived at the scene and found evidence that a shooting occurred, but after a search for the area, there were no victims immediately reported.

While canvassing the area, police say they did locate two unconscious people inside a vehicle but later confirmed that the pair got tired and fell asleep after enjoying Pre-Thanksgiving festivities inside the car. "They were not struck by gunfire," police said.

Authorities say the suspect arrived in the area and began firing rounds at unknown people. Bullets did strike property at that location, according to police.

The motive for the shooting remains under investigation.
