Overnight Armed Carjacking Under Investigation

Newark

Newark Police are investigating a string of carjackings that occurred over the weekend around the city.

According to police, the latest incident happened overnight.

Police say, two armed black male suspects targeted the victim in the vicinity of 18th Avenue and Bergen Street then stole their vehicle at gunpoint.

The vehicle was reported as a red 2011 BMW with temporary license plates.

Officers canvassing the area found the vehicle and attempted to pull over the driver around 4 a.m.

The driver sped from the scene but ultimately crashed the BMW in the 200 block of South 7th Street. According to police, the several suspects bailed from the car and entered a black Mercedes Benz

-also believed carjacked Saturday- that accompanied the assailants during their crime spree.

Police say there were no physical injuries reported in this incident.

Over the weekend, there have been a total of fours -reported- carjackings and a vehicle theft that resulted from an armed robbery and violent assault of the victim near Branch Brook Park in the North Ward.
