Over Two Dozen Homeless After Two-Alarm Building Fire in Newark

Fire officials in Newark are investigating a fire that destroyed a large residential building in Newark's South Ward Saturday night.

According to officials, heavy flames ripped through the roof of a three-story multi-family building located at 168 Sherman Avenue just before 9:50 p.m.

Crews arrived at the scene an began an exterior attack after much of the building's rear and upper floors were engulfed in flames.

Firefighters raced inside the building when they learned that there were possible trapped residents inside the burning home.

Crews were able to gain control of the fire in about an hour and the cause is under investigation.

A search of the building came back negative for injuries according to fire officials.
