Over $70K Fine Imposed on Newark Chemical Manufacturer

Authorities announced that a Newark chemical manufacturer was fined more than $70,000 for a numerous of hazardous working conditions.

A total of 17 citations were issued after investigators visited Elan Chemical Company on Doremus Avenue back in August.

According to reports, there were deficiencies in its equipment process safety information, written operating procedures, contractor safety and its inspection and testing of equipment.

The use of ethyl chloride - a highly flammable liquefied gas - in the facility can result in a chemical release, a serious fire or even an explosion, creating a hazardous environment for workers.

The company was fined a total of $72,100 for the violations.

The company now has the option of complying before the one month deadline, contest the penalties or request a meeting with a New Jersey-based OSHA director.
