Out-of-Control Shootings Leave One Dead, Several Injured Around Newark

An evening of shooting violence that gripped several sections in the city of Newark ended with at least six people shot and one casualty during the overnight hours. 

In the fatal shooting episode, Newark Police were dispatched to the 30's block of Van Vechten Street after they received reports of shots fired around 11:10 p.m 

When officers arrived, they found a severely injured, unconscious and unresponsive male suffering multiple bullet wounds. 

According to police, the victim was provided CPR at the scene then rushed to University Hospital, where doctors made the pronouncement before 12:55 a.m. 

The Essex County Prosecutor's Office was notified and responded to the location to lead the investigation. 

Newark Police officials said officers were stretched thin through the evening after gunfire erupted in several sections of the city since 6 p.m. 

Officials said the first shooting incident struck a male victim on Grumman Avenue. 

At approximately 7:40 p.m., multiple rounds of gunfire erupted in the area of Eagles Parkway and Lincoln Street, injuring a juvenile and an adult. 

Police said shortly after setting up a crime scene to investigate a shooting on Lincoln Place, shooters fired rounds in the 1100 block of Broad Street that struck and injured two victims. 

All of the shootings are under investigation and no arrests were reported.
