One of Two Summit Armed Robbery Suspects Arrested

Summit Westfield

Police announced today that one of two suspects wanted in connection with Wednesday's liquor store armed robbery has been arrested.

Officers responded to Morris Avenue Liquors - formerly known as M&M Liquors - at approximately 8:44 p.m. Jan. 4th, for a report of a robbery.

According to the investigation, two masked suspects entered the store and confronted the store employee. One of the suspects, later identified as Darrell Mitchell, held the employee at gunpoint as the second suspect emptied the cash register. The two suspects then exited the store and ran northeast on Lafayette Avenue.

The following day at approximately 4 a.m., Summit Police Detectives along with officers from the Westfield Police Department executed a superior court search warrant at Mitchell’s Downer Street home in Westfield.

During the search of Mitchell’s home and vehicle, detectives recovered evidence believed to link him to the robbery.

Mitchell, 45, was arrested and charged in connection with the liquor store robbery.

Mitchell was transported to the Union County Jail where he was held pending a bail hearing.

The second suspect involved in the crime has not yet been apprehended.
