Officers Safely Deliver Baby Boy in Newark

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose announces that Emergency Services Officers of the Special Operations Division, Angel Gonzalez and Ronald Pohill, assisted in the delivery of a baby in the area of Commerce and Mulberry streets yesterday.

According to authorities, two officers raced to the scene and located the 29-year old woman sitting in the front seat of a vehicle with a baby’s head crowning at approximately 10:30 a.m.

The officers immediately assisted with the delivery by laying down sterile sheets and instructing the mother on when to push. The infant, a boy, was successfully delivered in one fluid motion.

The officers, who are trained in emergency services, suctioned fluids from the baby’s nose and mouth to facilitate his breathing until EMS arrived.

The mother and newborn were transported to Clara Maass Medical Center.

Director Ambrose commended Officers Pohill a nd Gonzalez saying, “Oftentimes, police work is all about being in the right place at the right time. These officers immediately sprang into action and assisted with the safe delivery of a newborn, all from a vehicle parked in the heart of downtown Newark.”
