Officer-Involved Shooting in Butler Under Investigation

Butler

Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Butler last night.

According to the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office, last night at approximately 7:17 p.m., authorities were informed by the Butler Police Department of an officer-involved shooting, involving a member of their department.

At this time, the Prosecutor’s Office can confirm that a Butler police officer discharged his weapon, striking a 23-year-old male multiple times at 3 Belleview Terrace, Butler.

No arrest has been made and no criminal charges have been filed at this time and the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Pursuant to the New Jersey Attorney General Directive (No. 2006-5; Supplemented July 28, 2015) on Officer Involved Shootings, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is conducting the investigation of events. The Butler Police Department is not responsible for the investigation as a member of that department discharged his duty weapon.

The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office is coordinating this investigation with the Division of Criminal Justice in Trenton as required by the 2015 Attorney General Directive.

In order to ensure the integrity of the investigation and to protect the rights of all persons involved, the Morris County Prosecutor’s Office cannot at this time provide any additional details of the incident. To do so would jeopardize the investigation in progress. As stated previously, there is no danger to the community.

Once this Office is able to do so a more formal and detailed statement may be issued. Until that time, however, no additional information will be released.
