North Bergen Man Convicted of Aggravated Assault

North Bergen

A 36-year-old North Bergen Man was convicted on May 25th by a Hudson County jury of aggravated assault.

According to authorities, on Oct. 8, 2015, Fundador Bonet sent text messages to one of the victims, Joel Lopez, ostensibly arranging a time and place for Lopez to pick up his six-year-old child. In actuality, those text messages were sent to lure Lopez to a dead-end street in Hoboken where Bonet and several others jumped and assaulted Lopez and his cousin Jesus Vazquez.

Lopez sustained a gash to the top of his head, a black eye, a knot on his forehead, facial swelling and bruising over his neck and arms.

The jury deliberated several hours before returning their decision of guilty on the aggravated assault count.

Bonet was acquitted on the two weapons counts of his indictment.

Bonet, who was previously convicted of aggravated manslaughter and aggravated assault, faces up to five years in New Jersey state prison.

The Honorable Patrick Arre, J.S.C. presided over the trial. Judge Arre is scheduled to sentence the defendant on June 30, 2017.
