Newark and much of North Jersey are waking up to stormy conditions this Monday morning as a powerful Nor’easter continues to sit over the region, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and localized flooding.
As of 4:30 a.m., steady rain and strong winds were battering the area, with temperatures around 56 degrees near Bergen Street and South Orange Avenue in Newark’s Central Ward.
The National Weather Service reports that the storm is now in its most intense phase, producing widespread downpours and wind gusts reaching up to 36 miles per hour.
Officials have declared a State of Emergency for New Jersey as the system continues to cause travel hazards, downed trees, and power outages in several communities.
In coastal areas like Manasquan and Surf City, conditions have worsened, with flooding and beach erosion already being reported.
NWS Forecasters expect periods of rain and wind throughout the day, tapering off into lighter showers by tonight.
Monday’s high will reach around 59 degrees, with sustained northeast winds between 18 and 21 mph. Rain is likely to continue into the evening before gradually clearing overnight.
Officials urge residents to remain cautious and patient as the storm moves through.
While traffic is expected to be lighter due to the Columbus Day holiday, those who must travel should use extra care on slick, wind-swept roads.
