According to information released by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the event is designed to introduce children and teens, ages 20 and under, to the joys of freshwater fishing while promoting healthy, drug- and alcohol-free lifestyles.

The Youth Fishing Challenge will take place at various locations statewide, rain or shine, on either Saturday, June 7,  — New Jersey’s Free Fishing Day, when no license or trout stamp is required for anyone 16 and older — or Sunday, June 8, 2025, when a fishing license and trout stamp are required for those 16 and over, depending on the site.

Each event will have its own rules, age categories, and schedule, so families are encouraged to check details for their local challenge.

Young participants will have the opportunity to win prizes for the fish they catch, but they must be present at the end of the event to claim their awards.

While parents and guardians are welcome to join the fun on the water, they will not be eligible for prizes.
