NJ Turnpike Crash in Elizabeth Causes Truck to Overturn; Severe Injuries

Elizabeth

By: Richard L. Smith

NJ State Troopers closed the NJ Turnpike's outer truck lanes while detectives investigated a crash with severe injuries reported in Elizabeth early Friday morning.

A preliminary investigation indicated that shortly before 3 a.m., police responded to reports of a crash in the northbound lanes of the NJ Turnpike. It happened just north of exit 13.

Upon arrival, emergency responders found an overturned tractor trailer with diesel fuel leaking from the truck.

One person suffered "life-threatening" injuries and another was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

The collision included at least one other smaller car, according to police.

Troopers ordered a Hazmat crew to the highway to assist in cleaning up the fuel. Transportation officials reported a 2-mile delay at around 4 a.m. and they expect heavy traffic on the road for the morning rush.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
