Newark Man Arrested by NJ Transit Police Officer for Attacking Bus Driver

NJ Transit Police has announced the arrest of a man who violently attacked a bus driver in Newark's North Ward on Monday.

According to a statement released by NJ Transit, the incident happened at approximately 6 p.m. at the Branchbrook Park Light Rail Station.

Offcials said the suspect, Mr. Sergio Hernandez, 24, of Newark, began to strike the bus operator for an unknown reason before running away from the scene.

The bus operator suffered minor injuries from the attack.

Police say Officer Pena Perez arrested Hernandez on Tuesday afternoon after patrolling a section of the North Ward.

Hernandez was charged with Aggravated Assualt and Interference with transportation, according to police.

The incident remains under investigation.
